Where to intern this summer? The marketing student edition

It’s that time of the year again when second year business students are desperately looking for internships. For finance and accounting majors, the desired destination is usually a spot at one of the big four consulting firms. For DCSN students, it’s likely to be a supply-chain position at one of the larger consumer goods companies.

But marketing students have a wide array of choices from which to choose from, and this can be a dizzying task. As a senior marketing student, I have often been asked about the best places to complete the major’s required summer internship, and so I’m counting down my top choices for marketing-related internships for AUB students.

1 – Advertising

One of the most interesting experiences for marketing students is interning in the planning or account management department of any of the top advertising agencies in the region, and there are quite a few.

M&C Saatchi: Beirut or Dubai

M&C Saatchi is an international advertising agency network formed in January 1995. The Lebanese office has worked with a myriad of notable institutions, such as Kunhadi, the Ministry of Tourism, Le mall, and Qatar National Bank. Saatchi welcomes many interns every year in both their Beirut and Dubai offices.

JWT: Dubai or Beirut

JWT has been recruiting AUB students for the past couple of years. Their office is located in the heart of downtown Beirut, and the company has worked with big name brands such Mtc touch, Depeche mode, and Heineken. They recently launched their 2015 summer internship program and are still looking for people, so hurry up and apply.

Impact BBDO: Dubai or Beirut

“At BBDO, the work encompasses every kind of creative content that can touch the consumer and reinforce the brand.” This is what the company stands for, according to their website. BBDO has worked with Lays, Pepsi, and Blom Bank, among many others. If you value creativity and seek a career in advertising, then Impact BBDO is the perfect place for you. Email the HR department to inquire about available positions.

Leo Burnett: Dubai or Beirut

Not only does Leo Burnett host many competitions on campus, but they also recruit some of the top marketing students from AUB for internship and full-time positions. The people at Leo believe that “creativity has the power to transform human behavior.” They have worked with a long list of top brands such as Kiri, McDonalds, and Heinz. They are currently looking for summer interns.

FP7: Dubai

FP7, which has been named one of the top 10 creative agencies of 2015 from the EMEA region, attracts many AUB students every year. The agency exposes you to the inner workings of many different industries and firms, among which have been L’Oréal, Maybeline, and Mcdonalds.

Memac Ogilvy: Beirut

Ogilvy & Mather is one of the largest marketing communications companies in the world. In Lebanon, it has worked with brands such as Nissan, ABC, and Sprite. The agency is looking for hard working interns to join their team this summer.

2 – Consumer Goods

Another option is to work at one the fast moving consumer goods companies. Here are the main firms in that field that have hired AUB interns in the past.

Nestle: Beirut

This company doesn’t really need an introduction. Nestle has welcomed many interns in the past and is currently looking for interns to join their sales and marketing departments. Who wouldn’t want to work with brands such as Nestea, Nescafe, and Kitkat.

Unilever: Beirut

Do you consume products such as Axe deodorant, Lipton tea, or Dove soap? Then, you are using a Unilever product. The company owns a wide array of household brands. If you enjoy sales or marketing, then Unilever might be the perfect fit for you. The company is currently looking for interns. Check out their website for more info.

P&G: Dubai

Procter & Gamble is an American multinational company that sells consumer products. You might be familiar with some of their brands such as Pringles, Tide, Ariel, and Pampers. Every year, the company recruits students for an internship in sales or marketing (they also have finance and supply chain internships). The company is very selective but has been known to provide students with a strong training experience.
3 – Marketing Consultancy and other Services

Wolff Olins: Dubai – Brand consultancy

Wolff Olins is one of the most unique options on this list. The company is a consulting firm that specializes in brand consultancy, and has worked with multinationals such as Microsoft, Google, and USA today. It only has four offices around the world, one of which is in Dubai. Last year, the firm recruited 3 interns from AUB and it is currently looking for other interns to join their strategy department. Google Business Associate internship: Dublin or Dubai – Customer Service or Sales

Who wouldn’t want to intern at Forbes’s number 1 best company to work for? The word Google speaks for itself. In addition to the crazy perks, the company introduces its interns to the fast-paced and lucrative online ad business. Last year, one OSB student joined their team in Dublin, Ireland. So if you are tech-savvy person who enjoys the digital world and customer service, this might be the best option for you, but keep in mind that the competition is really tough.

Whether it’s advertising or customer service, any these internships could be a great learning experience for a marketing student. The key to getting a suitable internship is writing a good CV and an attractive cover letter. In short: be creative, analytical, and aware of the basic marketing concepts, in order to get the best out of your internship hunt.
