On Sunday, August 28, the annual MTV Video Music Awards was hosted at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. Besides the extravagant performances and the winners, this year’s VMAs witnessed somewhat astounding fashion moments on the white carpet, and also the stage.

One of the most talked about outfits was Beyoncé’s bold Francesco Scognamiglio gown. Her gown was see-through with crystal studs and had an eye catching light blue feather arrangement around her neck and shoulders in the shape of wings. Shortly after, memes of Beyoncé’s dress took the internet by storm, with her being compared to everything; from a chicken to Niagara Falls.

Later on, the world witnessed her 15-minute groundbreaking performance. After her performance, Beyoncé accepted her Video of the Year award for “Formation” in a sheer white wedding gown. Beyoncé also accepted an award for Best Female Video of the Year for “Hold Up,” looking like royalty in an Elie Saab caped gold jumpsuit.

One of the major events that were set to happen at the VMAs is Britney’s performance on the same stage that nearly destroyed her career a few years ago. Spears opted for a short black Julien Macdonald dress that had a deeply slit neckline and an asymmetrical hemline. Her look was a bit disappointing for a star making a comeback, but she compensated for that on stage while wearing a yellow sequin cut-out leotard with matching yellow knee length boots.

Another major fashion appearance was Rita Ora’s black sheer Marc Jacobs gown featuring red and black fringe details. Rita wore a leather and fur jacket over her gown that just made her outfit look out of tune.

Show stoppers, models Stella Maxwell and Jeremy Scott, wore colorfully-patterned Moschino ensembles. Plus size model and designer Ashley Graham wore a stunning black see-through Naeem Khan gown. Ansel Elgort channeled his inner Edward Scissor Hands; wearing a bizarre black-chained ensemble. Nicki Minaj wore a floor length deep blue Bao Tranchi dress with sheer cut-outs at the waist and chest. Rihanna did not make an appearance on the white carpet, but had several performances on stage where she wore several outfits. Her most eye-catching outfit was the Alexandra Vaulthier Couture gown with long puffy sleeves and an oversized ball gown skirt that she wore as she accepted the Video Vanguard Award.

This year, a “Jackets with No Shirt Underneath” memo has been said to have circulated among celebrities before the show; where Amber Rose, Desiigner, TY Dolla $ign, Cassie, Jeremy Scott, G-Easy, pregnant Laura Perlongo, and Frankie Grande sported the look, and we all wished that we could’ve stopped it.
